This little light of mine….

In the sermon on the mount, Jesus tells His followers,

“[Mat 5:14 NKJV] "You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.”

The statement is not a suggestion (ie. hey guys, you should be the light..).  It is an indicative, you are the light.

A couple verses later Jesus goes on to say,

"[Mat 5:16 NKJV] "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”

This is an imperative statement.  He directs us by this to consider our words, our thoughts, our actions and orchestrate them in such a way that they draw attention to our Father in heaven.

It is easy for me to get caught up in building my. ‘sand castle,’ kingdom that will soon be washed away in the tide.  Jesus invites us into building the Kingdom that will last for all eternity. It takes intentional, deliberate planning and work to live in such a way among our friends, family and co-workers that our lives will be leveraged to honor God.

To glorify my Father is what I want of my life.  It is the greatest use of our time, talent and treasure.  It is the purpose of our light.

Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.
